Re:racial discrimination rampant here in this country - 2008/05/22 08:45I beg to disagree, we should be proud with our legitimate DH.
Be proud of them? What is there to be proud of? Wake up and smell the coffee! The correct words should be admiration and pity. You should admire their guts for takin' great risks and you should pity them for such decision. Sending your countrymen unprotected and into the wild as domesticated slaves (Super Maids) is just a reflection of how poor and irresponsible our government are. Never in my entire life will I ever be proud of any of this!
You are so idealistic swat. You honestly think that being role models to companies we are working for can change the way they look at us? It doesnt work that way.
For clarification, I don't hate domestic helpers. I had enough of reading about them and their horrible fate in the newspapers. Violence against these poor people is a personal attack on my dignity as a Filipino.

Filipina thrashed, set on fire for refusing sex
Kuwait : The Ahmadi police have taken into custody a Kuwaiti man for reportedly burning to death a Filipina because she refused to have sex with him, reports Al-Jareedah daily.
The burned remains of the woman were found a few days ago and police investigations led securitymen to the alleged killer who is believed to be in his 30s.
According to a security source, the man beat the woman severely because she refused to sleep with him. When she became unconscious he poured an inflammable substance on her body and set fire to her.
NOW ARE YOU STILL PROUD?

This is a question to everybody....
In kuwait how many percentage of abused DH are we talking about?
10%, 20%, 30% and so on…..
Maybe we are just assuming that abuse is rampant, but do we really know the real number?
Maybe its 1 out of 100, or 2, 3, 4…………..
The Philippine Embassy knows the number, so if it’s rampant why not totally ban DH from coming here. Surely our government will do something if the number is hugely significant.
You see people back home is also thinking of the percentage of success against an almost zero by staying in Philippines.
If you or I are on their shoes…what would you do? For me I will surely make a gamble in going here.

Banning the importation of Domestic Helpers (DH) would be a nice idea but it's easier said than done. I don't think it will ever happen. Filipinos back home who are desperate for jobs would risk anything to come here. If they're unemployed in the Philippines, 40KD can look promising. Unfortunately, most of the employers here are aware of this and therefore they take advantage of the maids.
We all want to improve our standard of living but if it means getting beaten and abused, I will definitely discourage them to come here and suggest that they go and look for jobs somewhere else.
One possibble option would be to limit the number of DH coming here and bring more skilled workers. Maybe it's going to change about how they'll look at Filipinos. Hopefully they'll realise that majority of us are educated and not just nannys and maids.

Honestly... I'm really saddened everytime i hear news about OFWs abused. For the last 3 months... ilan-ilan na din ang napanuod ko abused maids na pinay sa Kuwait..UAE...Saudi....
Some of them maybe fortunate na may maayus na amo.. but some maybe different.
There are hundreds cases now in the embassy of DHs.. some raped..some abused..etc.
For me it has to "stop" and as what the ambassador says form Ivy's interview (hehehehe... plugging) we need to divert to skilled as well. eka nga ni REM "We have to improve our standing ditto sa Kuwaiti society. They should not look at us like supplier lang ng mga DH. Ako ayoko my marinig na sasbihin ng mga Pilipino DH lang dito sa Kuwait."
If you emphatize with the DHs.. its true you can feel that for them mostly in Visayas at Mindanao... to work in abroad parang status symbol sa kanila. (again plugging from Ivys interview with ambassador. I have experienced being with them in the embassy. So its not about discouraging them but its all about taking care of them.
So in the end... how can this abused...raped..etc DH uplift their standard of living?
Right now there are more than a hundred cases in Philippine embassy for Pinay DHs. and I felt sad talaga about this. . . . what can we do. . .

I beg to disagree, we should be proud with our legitimate DH. Before I was really amaze how an OFW can accept such a low salary. This thinking is a perspective coming from a professional and/or middle class. But for most poor Filipinos that had short comings with education…. a measly salary we are pertaining to is a fortune.
Professionals and skilled workers like us, have the biggest burden to uplift the social status of Filipinos. We could start with our own company of work; show our boss and co-workers that we are indeed hardworking, trustworthy, and professional in all sense of the word. Then we would have earned respect for ourselves and all Filipinos as a whole.
Let us not discourage our fellow Filipinos that are doing legal works to uplift his or her standard of living back home.

We can start to uplift our social status here in Kuwait by banning the importation of Super Maids (ika nga ni Gloriang stupida!). We are being stereotype as mere slaves because the ones that are cleaning their mess and wiping their ass are Pinays!
Rape here, violence there! Is it worth the measly 40KD a month salary?
